Making Memories and Embracing the True Meaning of Christmas
Memories Are Made Together
Today is Mama Dee Day: my favorite day of the week!
Later, I’ll be picking up Elliot for an afternoon of play, fun, and meaningful conversation. We never quite know where our time together will lead, but today I’m especially excited about the tiny ornaments I picked up for the little tree behind me. My hope? That decorating it with Elliot becomes one of those sweet, joy-filled memories we both treasure for years to come.
As the holiday season unfolds, memories from my own childhood rush back. I remember decorating our family tree with my parents and my sister. Even though we lived way out in the country and only a handful of friends and family would ever see our tree, the thrill of transforming our living room into a festive haven felt absolutely magical.
My dad had his own certain way of hanging the Christmas lights (and they always needed untangling first!). My sister and I would carefully hang the fragile glass ornaments, doing our best to keep them from breaking. And when the lights finally flickered to life and glowed through the silver tinsel… it felt magical.
When Christmas Memories Are Hard
As I reflect on these moments, I realize something important: not everyone carries warm childhood memories of Christmas. If that’s you, I want to offer gentle encouragement.
Your past does not have to define your future. You can begin today to create the kind of memories your heart longs for. You can build new traditions marked by warmth, joy, and purpose.
Discovering the Names of Jesus This Season
As much as I love the lights and ornaments, our place in this season goes far deeper than décor. Christmas is an invitation to rediscover the Names of Jesus, the titles that reveal who He is and the gift we have in Him.
One of the most powerful of those names is found in Isaiah’s prophecy.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government
will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 9:6

Jesus, Our Mighty God
A Prophecy Fulfilled in the One Who Is Powerful and Present
Isaiah spoke these words more than 700 years before Jesus’ birth, declaring that the coming Savior would be called Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God. These titles describe more than poetic attributes; they reveal His strength, authority, wisdom, and tender leadership.
In ancient Israel, “mighty men of valor,” like those in King David’s army (2 Samuel 23), were known for courage, skill, and remarkable feats. And yet none compare to the might of Jesus who is the Mighty God who came to save us.
Our God is mighty not only because He performs great deeds, but because He lovingly invites us into His transforming work.
He is not distant.
He is not disinterested.
He is mighty on your behalf.
He rejoices over you, strengthening you, and covering you with steadfast love.
The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17
