The Quest for Peace
You know, in a world that feels louder and messier by the day, it’s no wonder so many of us are longing for a little peace in our homes, our relationships, our communities… honestly, everywhere.
And even though we try so hard to keep the peace, our own thoughts and emotions can get in the way, can’t they?
But here’s the beautiful truth:
There is a steady, trustworthy source of peace and His Name is Jesus.
When we let His Word shape the way we think and respond, something inside us shifts.
When our thoughts are transformed by His Word, we can experience the peace that surpasses understanding.
The Mystery of Peace
Peace can feel like such a mystery. How do you hang onto it when life is spinning and nothing feels certain?
Paul gives us such practical wisdom in Philippians chapter 4:
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When life feels like it’s spinning and nothing feels certain, I’ve put this simple system into place in order to calm my anxiousness;
Here’s what this looks like for me, in real life, when my heart starts racing and my thoughts try to run ahead of me.
- I Remember Who God Is:
The God of Peace who surpasses my understanding. - I Remember Who I Am:
I am welcome to bring my fears and anxious heart to Him with thanksgiving. - I Remember the Promises of God:
He is near and will guard my heart and mind.
By taking a few moments to recall who God is and to thank Him for the relationship I have with Him through Jesus, I remind myself that He has promised to never leave me and that His peace is mine because of Jesus.
The mystery of having peace in the middle of chaos is all because of Jesus’ gift to us.
John 14:27 NIV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
Experiencing Peace Amidst Turmoil
I still remember a moment from over 20 years ago when my dad was in the hospital with a ruptured brain aneurysm. It was one of those situations where everything should’ve felt like pure chaos… yet I was overwhelmed by an unexplainable peace.
Everything around me said ‘panic’, but my spirit felt held
It wasn’t because I knew what the outcome would be: I didn’t.
It was because I paused long enough to remember who God is. That simple act steadied me.
By God’s mercy, my dad survived and recovered after a lot of therapy. But here’s the part that still sticks with me: that peace would’ve been there even if things had turned out differently, because it wasn’t attached to the circumstances. It was anchored in God’s character and His promises.
A Reunion of Family and Faith
In the middle of all that uncertainty, our family gathered in the waiting room. Even with the tension and fear of an unknown outcome, God’s peace settled over us.
There was comfort knowing that no matter what happened, my dad was held by the God of Peace.
And if God chose to take him home, he would’ve stepped straight into heaven. That assurance brought a kind of peace that didn’t make sense on paper but felt so solid in the moment.
Living with Peace Undeterred by Circumstances
That experience taught me something I’ll never forget:
peace doesn’t rise and fall with whatever’s happening around us. It rests on who God is — good, faithful, steady, unchanging.
When your peace is rooted in Him, you can walk through the unknown without being undone by it. Even if the story takes a turn you didn’t expect, His peace stays put.
