I want to take a moment to talk about a scripture commonly referenced during this time of year. It’s found in Isaiah 9:6.
It’s a verse that might sound familiar if you’ve ever been to a Christmas service or discussed it in your small group..
Understanding Isaiah’s Words
Isaiah 9:6 says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Today, let’s focus on the phrase “Wonderful Counselor.”
To truly grasp the meaning, I’ve used a simple, yet insightful approach during my Bible studies, involving six key questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how. These questions help me delve deeper into understanding the scriptures.
The Depth of ‘Wonderful Counselor’
When studying words from the Bible, I enjoy uncovering their original meanings.
Let’s unravel what “Wonderful Counselor” signifies.
“Wonderful” often means to marvel or something extraordinary. Interestingly, it also implies being beyond our understanding. Meanwhile, “Counselor” refers to advising, counseling, or providing guidance.
In essence, when referred to as a Wonderful Counselor, it signifies that Jesus offers guidance and wisdom that surpasses our comprehension.
Personal Insights on Guidance
I occasionally seek counseling to untangle my thoughts and emotions. Like many, I sometimes struggle to discern truth amid life’s challenges. My counselor isn’t there to interpret things for me; instead, she guides me to understand reality, aligning my perceptions with God’s truth. This help is invaluable when navigating relationships and life’s fast-paced demands.
Similarly, Jesus is our eternal counselor who embodies God’s word. With his wisdom, we are never alone in our struggles because he extends his guidance through every twist and turn life throws at us.
The Marvel of the Savior’s Journey
“Wonderful” also invites us to reflect on the awe-inspiring journey of Jesus. Consider how he, the King of Heaven, chose to be born in humble conditions as foretold in Luke 2.
The scriptures recount his miraculous conception through Virgin Mary, illustrating incomprehensible divine power. Though aspects of his story remain a mystery to us, what stands clear is his purpose: living a sinless life to ultimately be the sacrifice required for our salvation.
It’s okay to acknowledge that some elements surpass our understanding. What remains crucial is recognizing Jesus’s role as our eternal Wonderful Counselor who guides us through his unwavering truth.
A Timeless Promise
Jesus’ identity as our Wonderful Counselor brings reassurance. His Word, full of truth and guidance, stands eternal.
Let me leave you with a beautiful verse from another Old Testament prophet.
These words remind me that God is not only strong and mighty on my behalf, but that He also delights in me as His beloved; not unlike the way I feel about my sweet Elliot.
The Lord your God is with you,
the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17 NIV
