What is a Proverbs 31 woman to do when anxiety overwhelms her?

Anxiety is a common struggle in today’s world, even in the life of a modern Proverbs 31 woman. Christian women are not immune to worries, fears, and stresses. We experience anxious hearts and restless minds just like anyone else.

What Is Anxiety?

Let’s clarify what we mean by anxiety. I’m not a medical professional, and I understand that some forms of anxiety are clinical and require medical care or professional counseling. If that’s your situation, please seek the help you need.

Here, we’ll focus on the kind of anxiety caused by life’s stressors: financial pressure, strained relationships, uncertainty about the future, or overwhelming responsibilities.

Our bodies respond to stress with increased heart rate, shallow breathing, or even panic. Spiritually, anxiety grows when we forget to focus on God’s promises and His power to sustain us.

How Do I Pray When I’m Feeling Anxious?

The apostle Paul gives us a clear path in Philippians 4:4–7. The secret to overcoming anxiety is shifting our focus.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4–7 CSB)

Step 1: Rejoice

You may wonder: How can I rejoice when I’m worried?

Paul wrote these words while in a Roman prison, facing hardship and uncertainty. His joy was not in his circumstances, but in God’s presence.

“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their cry.” (Psalm 34:15 CSB)

We rejoice because we are not alone. The Lord is near.

Step 2: Let Your Gentle Spirit Be Known

Gentleness reflects trust in God. Instead of reacting with anger, panic, or fear, the Proverbs 31 Woman chooses grace. She knows that God is at work in every detail, and she doesn’t need to control everything.

Step 3: Be Anxious for Nothing

This sounds impossible—but Paul gives us the keys:

  • Prayer – Talking honestly with God about what troubles you.
  • Supplication – Humbly acknowledging God’s power and surrendering your need to Him.
  • Thanksgiving – Choosing gratitude in the midst of trial, trusting God’s goodness no matter the outcome.

“Give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 CSB)

Step 4: Receive the Peace of God

When we pray with faith and thanksgiving, God fills our hearts with His peace-peace that makes no sense to the world, peace that steadies us in chaos.

A Personal Story of Peace in the Chaos

Years ago, my father suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm. As we rushed to the hospital, my thoughts raced with fear and questions.

What would happen to my mom?
What would life look like for our family?

On my knees, I prayed: “God, I thank You that my dad knows You. Help me not to be afraid and to honor You no matter what comes.”

Though the waiting room was filled with fear, I was filled with peace. Not because of my strength, but because I had learned through daily devotional habits—prayer, Scripture, and trust- to seek God first.

By God’s mercy, my dad survived and is still thriving. But even if the outcome had been different, God had already given me the peace I needed.

How Can I Pray for You?

Every Christian woman faces unique challenges: prodigal children, loved ones struggling with addiction, broken relationships, or financial stress. Anxiety is real, but so is the peace of God.

If you’d like prayer, simply comment PRAYER below. I don’t need to know the details- God already knows.

It would be my joy to lift you before Him and ask that He fill your heart with peace.
