Wondering which Bible translation is best for you? Learn the differences between word-for-word, thought-for-thought, and paraphrase Bibles so you can choose the best Bible for study and devotion!

Understanding the Bible Translations and their Differences:

I was five years old when I received my first Bible. It was a King James Version (KJV), and I remember my mom taking me to the local jewelry store to have my name engraved on the cover. Even at a young age, I knew this book was special—but I had no idea what it said!

As a Bible Study Mentor, Christian women often ask me:
“Which Bible translation should I read?”

Many of us grew up with the King James Version, but today, there are dozens of Bible translations to choose from. The KJV is a beautiful, time-honored translation, and there are verses I memorized as a child that still echo in my mind with words like “whosoever” and “shall not.” However, if you struggle to understand it, you might find it challenging to engage deeply with God’s Word.

So, how do you choose the best Bible translation for you?

Let’s explore the three main types of Bible translations and how they differ.

Understanding Bible Translations

1. Word-for-Word Translations (Formal Equivalence)

Best for: In-depth Bible study, teaching, and those who want a precise translation.

Word-for-word translations stick as closely as possible to the original Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic texts. Because of this, they tend to be more literal but sometimes harder to read.

 Examples of Word-for-Word Translations:

  • New American Standard Bible (NASB) – Highly accurate, great for deep study.
  • English Standard Version (ESV) – A balance of accuracy and readability.
  • King James Version (KJV) / New King James Version (NKJV) – The KJV has traditional language, while the NKJV modernizes vocabulary.

2. Thought-for-Thought Translations (Dynamic Equivalence)

Best for: Personal reading, new believers, and those who want a smooth reading experience.

Instead of translating each word literally, these versions focus on meaning, making them more readable and natural in modern English.

 Examples of Thought-for-Thought Translations:

  • New International Version (NIV) – A widely used, balanced translation.
  • Christian Standard Bible (CSB) – A mix of accuracy and readability.
  • New Living Translation (NLT) – Very easy to read, great for devotional use.

When my husband, Mike, and I celebrated our first Christmas together, he gave me an NIV Study Bible. It included helpful study notes, cross-references, and concordance, which made all the difference in my Bible study journey.

Before using this study Bible, I struggled with the KJV and, honestly, rarely read my Bible outside of church. Having a Bible I could understand changed everything!

3. Paraphrases (Even More Readable but Less Precise)

Best for: Devotional reading and gaining fresh insight, but not ideal for deep study.

Paraphrases reword Scripture into everyday language, making the Bible feel conversational. While they can bring Scripture to life, they shouldn’t replace study Bibles for serious theological study.

Examples of Paraphrase Bibles:

  • The Message (MSG) – A creative, modern interpretation.
  • The Living Bible (TLB) – Simplifies Scripture but sometimes adds interpretation.

Which Bible Translation is Right for You?

It depends on your goals!

  • If you want accuracy, choose a word-for-word translation
  • If you want clarity, go with a thought-for-thought translation.
  • If you want a fresh perspective, a paraphrase Bible may be helpful.

Many Christian women find value in using both types of Bible translations—a literal version for study and a readable version for devotions.

My Heartfelt Message to You

If you’ve been told that the King James Version is the only Bible you should read, but you struggle to understand it, what good is it doing you?

Hear me clearly: The KJV is a wonderful translation, but not reading the Bible at all is holding you back from growing into the woman of God you are called to be.

The most important thing is not which translation you use—it’s that you read God’s Word regularly. Supplementing with any number of online Bible study resources is also a great way to learn and understand God’s word. The Holy Spirit is our teacher, and as we read, He will guide us into truth.

When the Word of God fills our hearts, it transforms our lives. It impacts our marriages, friendships, parenting, and ministries—everything.
