Scripture Focus: John 15:1–4
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” – John 15:4 (ESV)
Staying Connected in a Disconnected World
Have you ever had one of those days when you’re pulled in a million directions? Between caring for everyone else, trying to keep the house from falling apart, and squeezing in a quiet time, it’s easy to feel disconnected… from peace, from purpose… and yes, even from God.
I long to be the example of a Proverbs 31 woman—that my husband may be blessed by my integrity and devotion, and that my children may rise and call me “Blessed.” But in all honesty, I fail miserably many times. Left to my own strength, I fall far short of the Christian woman I long to be—one who honors Christ in how she lives, loves, and leads.
On my own, I feel lonely, disconnected, and often discouraged. I know I need a source of life that’s greater than what I can access in my own effort. I cannot do enough—or be enough—to meet the demands of this life by simply trying harder.
The more I strive to be a “good Christian woman,” the more pressure I feel… and the farther behind I fall. People-pleasing and constant striving leave little room for peace, purpose, or prayer. That’s why I love the word abide. It’s not about doing more for Jesus—it’s about staying with Jesus.
What Abiding Really Means (and What It Doesn’t)
In John 15, Jesus paints a beautiful picture of what it means to be connected to Him: He is the Vine, and we are the branches. The branch doesn’t try to produce fruit on its own. It simply stays connected—and life flows through.
The word “abide” in this passage comes from the Greek word meno, meaning to remain, dwell, stay, or continue.
For me, to abide means living in faith as I allow God’s Word to transform who I am into the Christian woman He has called me to be.
It’s not a quick visit or a Sunday check-in. Abiding is an ongoing, daily, hour-by-hour relationship with Jesus. It’s choosing to keep Him close—in your thoughts, in your conversations, in your decisions, and in your daily routines.
✅ Abiding Means:
- Staying spiritually connected to Jesus—acknowledging that He is always near and only a prayer away.
- Making space in your heart and mind for His Word—studying, memorizing, and allowing it to transform your heart, soul, mind, and strength.
- Trusting Him throughout your day—not just during quiet time. Abiding becomes a love relationship, not a checklist.
“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV)
When we abide in His Word, what we know becomes how we live. And as we live it out, we are equipped to share it with others.
🚫 Abiding Doesn’t Mean:
- Being perfect or always feeling spiritual. Give yourself permission to let go of perfection.
- Adding more tasks to your to-do list. Jesus isn’t asking you to do more—He’s inviting you to choose what is better. (Consider linking to: Walking with the Women of Easter)
- Earning God’s love through your effort. You can’t earn what He already freely gives.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” – Ephesians 2:8–9 (NASB)
The Power of Connection
Think about a lamp. It can be beautifully made, well-designed—but if it’s not plugged in, it won’t shine.
We’re the same. When we’re disconnected from Jesus, we try to shine on our own—and it wears us out.
But when we abide? That’s when peace flows, fruit grows, and life flourishes. Not because of us, but because of Him.
My Abiding Moment (A Little Story)
I remember when I realized I didn’t truly love God’s Word. I struggled to have a quiet time—a “verse a day to keep the devil away” was about all I could manage. I hoped that attending every church service would be enough to earn grace with God.
I was doing all the “right” things, but my heart still felt dry.
One day, I sat with just one verse—John 15:4—and let it settle in. No agenda. No pressure. Just being with Jesus.
One of my favorite ways to slow down and abide in the words of Jesus is to visit the sea. The fresh, salty air… the sound of the waves… the vast horizon… they calm my heart, soul, and mind. Within moments, I feel peace—His peace—and the weight of life begins to lift.
That moment of slowing down changed everything. I wasn’t just reading the Word—I was abiding in it.
An Honest Question for You
Do you believe you can truly love Jesus and not read His Word?
Please read that again—and reflect honestly.
I once asked this question to a group of women, and someone replied, “Yes,” without hesitation. They believed loving Jesus wasn’t dependent on reading the Bible. And while it’s true—Jesus loves us unconditionally—are we loving Him well in return if we don’t seek to know His Word?
“If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.” – 2 Timothy 2:13 (NLT)
Let’s Make It Real
Abiding looks different for each of us. For one woman, it might be a whispered prayer while folding laundry. For another, it might be journaling before the sun rises. However it looks, it’s not about the “how”—it’s about the Who.
So let me ask you:
What are you abiding in today?
Is it peace… or pressure?
Jesus… or your to-do list?
Let’s trade striving for staying.
Let’s abide.
